"Cold Skin" is a 2017 science fiction horror film directed by Xavier Gens and based on the novel of the same name by Albert Sánchez Piñol. Set in the early 20th century, the story follows a young man named Friend (played by David Oakes) who arrives on a remote and isolated island in the Antarctic to work as a weather observer.
Friend soon discovers that the island is inhabited by humanoid amphibious creatures known as "Females" who rise from the sea every night to attack the lighthouse he resides in. The only other human on the island is a lighthouse keeper named Gruner (played by Ray Stevenson), who has been living there for years and has developed a tense and violent relationship with the Females.
As Friend tries to survive the nightly attacks, he slowly befriends one of the creatures, a Female (played by Aura Garrido), whom he names Aneris. Through their interactions, Friend begins to question the nature of the Females and his own humanity. He learns that the Females are actually a matriarchal species forced to live in the ocean due to the harsh conditions on the island.
Friend becomes torn between his loyalty to Gruner and his growing connection to Aneris. He witnesses the brutality of Gruner's treatment of the Females and starts to empathize with their plight. As the film progresses, Friend must confront his own prejudices, make difficult choices, and challenge the established order on the island.
"Cold Skin" delves into themes of xenophobia, fear of the unknown, and the inherent savagery of human nature. It combines elements of horror, fantasy, and adventure, creating a visually stunning and atmospheric film that explores the complexities of human-animal relationships and the boundaries of empathy.
